FAA and FBI Investigate Fake Wi-Fi Network Incident on Delta Flight

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are investigating an incident where a fake Wi-Fi network was set up on a Delta flight. The flight, which took place from Las Vegas to Atlanta, reportedly involved passengers who had attended a cybersecurity conference, according to Ars Technica.

The incident occurred one day after the conclusion of DEF CON, a well-known security conference held in Las Vegas. Passengers allegedly spoofed the onboard Wi-Fi and created a fake network named “Delta WiFi Fast,” used for phishing passengers' credentials, TechCrunch reports.

The pilots became aware of the suspicious network and promptly informed air traffic control. Despite the fraudulent activity, Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant assured that the flight's safety was not compromised as no aircraft operating systems were affected. The legitimate Wi-Fi was deactivated for about 30 minutes.

Federal authorities are currently examining the incident. The FBI acknowledged the situation but has not made any arrests or met the flight upon its arrival. Delta is coordinating with federal law enforcement and aviation regulators to fully investigate, as affirmed by TechCrunch.
