NASA is set to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope by the end of next month, equipped with pioneering technology to explore distant exoplanets. According to MIT Technology Review, the telescope will be the first of its kind to carry an 'active' coronagraph, designed to block out starlight that typically obscures planetary observations.

The active coronagraph will allow astronomers to capture unprecedented images of planets orbiting stars beyond our solar system. This technology could pave the way for future missions aimed at identifying Earth-like exoplanets, reports The Verge.

Named after NASA's first chief of astronomy, the Roman Space Telescope boasts a 300-megapixel wide-field camera, enabling it to photograph areas 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope's widest shots. This remarkable capability may lead to the detection of approximately 100,000 new exoplanets, TechCrunch notes.

The device's unique deformable mirrors, featuring a pattern of tiny actuators, enable 'active wavefront control.' This innovation helps accurately suppress unwanted light, revealing previously unseen planetary bodies. This could transform the way astronomers identify and study exoplanets.
