Sony and Warner Sue Anthropic Over AI Copyright Infringements

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music filed a lawsuit against AI company Anthropic, accusing it of illegally using their copyrighted musical compositions. The lawsuit, submitted in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges massive copyright infringement as Anthropic allegedly utilized thousands of protected works to train its AI models, according to Engadget.
The plaintiffs seek a jury trial and demand up to $150,000 per infringed work plus $25,000 for each instance where copyright management information was removed. This could potentially lead to billions in damages if the court rules in favor of Sony and Warner. The Verge highlighted the lawsuit's claim as one of the "largest thefts of intellectual property in history."
TechCrunch reported that the companies accuse Anthropic of "flagrant piracy," including illegal torrents and scraping of copyrighted materials. They allege that co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann personally participated in the acts of infringement.
Anthropic has previously faced similar legal challenges. Earlier this year, Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group sought over $3 billion in a lawsuit accusing Anthropic of similar offenses. Additionally, Anthropic settled a lawsuit from authors for $1.5 billion, related to unauthorized use of their works for training AI.
