Currently, traditional rooftop solar and home battery systems require professional installation, which can be cost-prohibitive. The introduction of plug-in options can significantly reduce these costs. Plug-in solar systems are already a common sight in Germany, boasting over a million installations.

Regen advocates for extending these regulations to include plug-in batteries. These portable energy storage solutions can be easily connected to standard wall sockets. Without needing professional installation, the cost is significantly lowered, making them accessible to renters and those unable to afford traditional systems.

These innovations could particularly benefit low-income households and apartment dwellers who are often excluded from existing green energy solutions. By leveraging time-of-use tariffs, households can charge batteries during cheaper, off-peak periods and discharge them when electricity is more expensive, offering cost savings over time.

Analysis from Regen suggests that a single 3 kWh plug-in battery could result in savings up to £2,400 over ten years for high-energy households when using a time-of-use tariff. The payback period for these batteries can begin as early as 2.5 years after installation, with potential savings growing over the product's lifetime.

While the potential savings are attractive, Regen notes the actual benefits depend on various factors including tariff choice and household energy usage patterns. Larger battery systems or those able to shift major electricity use to off-peak times could see even greater cost reductions over a decade.

The government's move to make plug-in solar panels legal indicates a significant shift towards consumer-friendly renewable energy options that do not require substantial initial investments. This approach aligns with strategies seen across Europe, highlighting a growing trend in decentralized renewable energy systems.
