Waymo Launches Next-Gen Ojai Robotaxi in Los Angeles, Phoenix, SF

Waymo has now made its next-generation robotaxi, the Ojai, available to all riders in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. This rollout marks a significant advancement for the company as it aims to expand its fleet with more cost-efficient vehicles, according to TechCrunch.

The Ojai robotaxi is equipped with Waymo’s advanced sixth-generation self-driving system, designed for a wide range of vehicle types. This system is critical for Waymo’s strategy to achieve mass scalability and profitability. Currently, Waymo has around 300 Ojai vehicles in operation, and plans are underway to double this number in the near future, based on reports from a company spokesperson.

Engadget notes that the Ojai model has been introduced with new features such as spacious designs and backseat entertainment options. It's built on a platform by Zeekr, a Geely Holding Group brand based in China, which Waymo has partnered with since 2021.

Although the Ojai is expected to optimize costs, import tariffs on the Chinese-built vehicles have posed challenges. These tariffs increase the expense of each unit once it is retrofitted with Waymo’s self-driving systems in Arizona.

The launch expands the reach of Waymo’s autonomous service, previously reliant on modified Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. This move is a step towards reducing dependency on the more expensive Jaguar I-Pace fleet and venturing into diverse markets.

Further expansion is on the horizon as Waymo plans to introduce the Ojai to other cities such as Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego later this year. This signifies a broader strategic push towards autonomous vehicle integration in urban environments.

Despite moving forward, Waymo faces challenges with regulatory approvals and technical setbacks, as seen in recent issues with freeway operations. However, Waymo has recently successfully reinstated freeway access after addressing previous complications.
