Waymo to Launch Robotaxi Services in Munich by 2027
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced its plans to begin robotaxi operations in Munich by the end of 2027. This marks its first venture into the European Union, following the establishment of several subsidiaries across the continent, including in Germany, France, Spain, and the Netherlands, reported by Engadget.
The decision to expand into Munich aligns with Germany’s supportive legislative environment for autonomous vehicles. The country was the first in the EU to implement a legal framework permitting Level 4 autonomous driving, where the vehicle can operate without human intervention under specific conditions, according to TechCrunch.
Waymo's launch in Munich will take a phased approach, starting with mapping city streets using manually driven vehicles. Subsequently, it will conduct testing with human safety drivers before rolling out fully autonomous services upon receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.
