Airbound Secures $37M Funding for Rocket-Like Drone Delivery
Indian startup Airbound has announced a successful Series A funding round, raising $37 million to advance its drone delivery technology. With backing from investors such as Greenoaks, DoorDash, and Lachy Groom, Airbound aims to revolutionize the logistics sector by making airborne deliveries as cost-effective as road transportation, according to TechCrunch.
Founded in 2023, Airbound has quickly garnered attention for its innovative approach to drone design, creating vertical-flight drones lighter than their payloads to maximize efficiency. As TechCrunch reports, the company's TRT model weighs 3.3 pounds and can carry a 2.2-pound load, with future models expected to transport even heavier cargo.
The rocket-like, tail-sitter design enables the drones to take off and land vertically, switching to horizontal flight to cover distances efficiently. This eliminates the need for runways, enhancing operational flexibility, the company's founder and CEO, Naman Pushp, explained to TechCrunch.
Airbound's drones have already completed over 13,000 flights in southern India, including over 1,000 flights for the Indian hospital network Narayana Health. These drones significantly cut delivery times for diagnostic samples, completing routes in minutes compared to the hours trucks require, according to TechCrunch.
The recent funding will bolster Airbound’s goal to establish a robust drone delivery network in Andhra Pradesh. Airbound plans to enable up to 10,000 daily flights, covering retail, e-commerce, and healthcare deliveries. An agreement with the state’s government is already in place to support this expansion with necessary regulatory frameworks, TechCrunch notes.
While India’s drone delivery sector is increasingly competitive, with companies like Skye Air Mobility and TSAW Drones also exploring similar avenues, Airbound is set on differentiating itself through its pioneering design and operational strategies.
